This chapter contains the post-flood covenant, the blood prohibition, and the Cham (Ham)/Kenaan (Canaan) incident. The blessing of 9:1 echoes Gen 1:28. The covenant (9:8–17) is the first fully disclosed berit, with the bow (qesheth) as sign. Noach (Noah)'s first recorded speech (9:25–27) — after chapters of silence — is a curse. The text says Ham "saw the nakedness of his father"; the TT renders what the text says, not what it might mean.

And God blessed Noach (Noah) and his sons and said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the land.
And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every living thing of the land, and upon every bird of the sky, in all which the ground swarms, and in all the fish of the sea; into your hand they are given.
Every moving thing which is alive shall be food for you; as the green plant, I have given you everything.
Only flesh with its life — its blood — you shall not eat.
• The apposition "its life — its blood" is a defining equation: life = blood. The TT renders the dash to preserve the appositive structure.
And surely your blood of your lives I will seek; from the hand of every living thing I will seek it, and from the hand of the human, from the hand of a man, his brother, I will seek the life of the human.
Whoever sheds the blood of the human, by the human his blood shall be shed, for in the image of God he made the human.
And you, be fruitful and multiply, swarm on the land and multiply on it."
And God said to Noah and to his sons with him, saying,
"And I, see, I am establishing my covenant with you and with your seed after you,
and with every living being which is with you — the bird, the livestock, and every living thing of the land with you — from all going out of the tebah, to every living thing of the land.
And I will establish my covenant with you, and all flesh shall not be cut off again by the waters of the flood, and there shall not be again a flood to destroy the land."
And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant which I am giving between me and between you and between every living being which is with you, for generations of perpetuity:
my bow I have set in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of the covenant between me and between the land.
And it shall be when I bring clouds over the land, and the bow appears in the cloud,
and I will remember my covenant which is between me and between you and between every living being in all flesh, and the waters shall not again become a flood to destroy all flesh.
And the bow shall be in the cloud, and I will see it to remember the covenant of perpetuity between God and between every living being in all flesh which is upon the land."
And God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between me and between all flesh which is upon the land."
And the sons of Noah who went out from the tebah were Shem and Cham (Ham) and Yafet (Japheth); and Ham is the father of Kenaan (Canaan).
These three are the sons of Noah, and from these the whole land was spread abroad.
And Noah began as a man of the ground and planted a vineyard.
And he drank from the wine and became drunk, and he uncovered himself in the midst of his tent.
And Cham (Ham), the father of Kenaan (Canaan), saw the nakedness of his father, and he told his two brothers outside.
And Shem and Yafet (Japheth) took the garment and placed it upon the shoulder of the two of them, and they walked backward, and they covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and the nakedness of their father they did not see.
And Noah awoke from his wine, and he knew what his youngest son had done to him.
And he said, "Cursed be Kenaan (Canaan); a servant of servants he shall be to his brothers."
And he said, "Blessed be YHWH, God of Shem, and let Canaan be a servant to them.
May God enlarge Yafet (Japheth), and may he dwell in the tents of Shem, and let Canaan be a servant to them.
And Noah lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years.
And all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years, and he died.

CROSS-CHAPTER TRACKING (Gen 8 → Gen 9)
| Element | Gen 1:28 | Gen 9:1–7 |
|---|---|---|
| Blessing | "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the land" | "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the land" (identical) |
| Animal relationship | "Have dominion (radah)" | "Fear and dread (mora, chit)" upon them |
| Diet | Plants and fruit (1:29) | "Every moving thing alive" — meat permitted (9:3) |
| Subduing | "Subdue (kavash) the land" | Absent |
| Blood | Not mentioned | Blood = life; blood prohibition (9:4) |
| Violence | Not mentioned | Blood-reckoning; chiastic death penalty (9:5–6) |
| Image of God | "In the image of God he created them" (1:27) | "In the image of God he made the human" (9:6) |
The post-flood blessing is a modified re-creation: same fertility mandate, but with violence, fear, meat-eating, and blood-law added. The world after the flood is the same world — but harsher.
Covenant chain:
• 6:18: berit announced (first mention), no terms
• 9:9–11: terms disclosed (no more flood)
• 9:12–17: sign given (the bow in the cloud)
• This is the first complete covenant sequence: announcement → terms → sign
Noah's speech and silence:
• 6:9–9:24: Noah speaks zero recorded words. 15+ chapters of silent obedience.
• 9:25–27: his first and only speech — a curse on Canaan and blessings.
• The contrast is profound: the "righteous man" (6:9) who obediently saved creation speaks for the first time to curse.
Name-wordplay chain in Gen 6–9:
• Noach (n-w-ch): rest/comfort — 5:29 naming, 8:4 tebah rests, 8:9 dove's resting place, 8:21 pleasing aroma
• Shem = "name" — 6:4 "men of the name," 9:26 "God of Shem/Name"
• Cham = "hot/warm" — possible connection to 9:21 (wine, heat)
• Yafet = "enlarge/beautiful" — 9:27 "may God yaft (enlarge) Yefet"
Divine name distribution in Gen 9:
• 9:1–17: God/Elohim throughout (covenant = cosmic, structural)
• 9:26: YHWH (Noah's blessing: "Blessed be YHWH, God of Shem")
• Pattern continues: Elohim for creation-order speech, YHWH for personal/relational
Tselem (image) chain:
• 1:26–27: "Let us make the human in our image (tselem)... in the image (tselem) of God he created him"
• 5:1: "In the likeness of God he made him"
• 5:3: "And Adam begot in his likeness, in his image (tselem)"
• 9:6: "In the image (tselem) of God he made the human"
• The tselem persists through the flood. The image of God survives corruption, judgment, and destruction. It remains the basis for human dignity after the flood.
