This chapter introduces Yochanan the Immerser and "the kingdom of the skies." The phrase basileia tōn ouranōn ("kingdom of the skies") appears for the first time in Matthew — a phrase unique to this Gospel (the other Gospels use "kingdom of God"). The TT renders ouranōn as "skies" per alignment with HB shamayim. Yochanan's practice of baptisma is rendered as "immersion" per locked glossary. Proper names follow TT transliteration: Yochanan (not John), Perushim (not Pharisees), Tsduqim (not Sadducees), Yarden (not Jordan).

Supplementary — patterns across the chapter

1

In those days Yochanan (John) the Immerser comes, preaching in the wilderness of Yehudah (Judah),

YOCHANAN — TT TRANSLITERATION
- Ἰωάννης (Iōannēs) = Yochanan (Hebrew: יוֹחָנָן, Yochanan, "YHWH is gracious"). Familiar: John. The TT uses the Hebrew form to maintain the theophoric connection (the name contains YHWH).
"THE IMMERSER" — *HO BAPTISTĒS

ὁ βαπτιστής (
ho baptistēs) = "the immerser/dipper." Per locked glossary: baptisma* = immersion. The Greek has clear semantic content: dipping, immersing. The title identifies John by his characteristic practice.
HISTORICAL PRESENT — "COMES"
- παραγίνεται (paraginetai) = present tense, "comes/arrives." The historical present tense narrating a past event creates narrative immediacy. The TT preserves the present tense.
2

saying, "Change your minds, for the kingdom of the skies has drawn near."

CRITICAL — "KINGDOM OF THE SKIES" — FIRST OCCURRENCE
- ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν (hē basileia tōn ouranōn) = "the kingdom of the skies." This phrase is unique to Matthew (the other Gospels use "kingdom of God"); it appears 33 times in Matthew. The genitive plural οὐρανῶν = "of the skies" maps to HB שָׁמַיִם (shamayim) — always plural, always referring to the physical sky/skies — and the TT renders "skies" to preserve the concrete spatial sense and HB alignment over the abstract "heaven." Confidence: VERIFIED [TEXTUAL].
"Heaven" in modern English carries metaphysical and afterlife connotations that neither shamayim nor ouranos inherently carries — the sky is the visible domain above the land, the same sky of Genesis 1:8 where God named the raqia "Sky."
For discussion of whether "skies" vs. "God" reflects Jewish divine-name reverence or a distinct theological emphasis, and for the full alignment with shamayim, see companion Sections A1 and D1.
"CHANGE *YOUR* MINDS" — *METANOEITE

μετανοεῖτε (
metanoeite) = imperative of metanoia (change of mind). Per locked glossary: "change of mind" rather than "repent." The Greek prefix meta- (change) + nous (mind/perception) = a cognitive reorientation. "Repentance" has acquired emotional and penitential overtones in later tradition. The TT preserves the cognitive dimension. The your* is added in italics — the Greek imperative implies the addressee.
"HAS DRAWN NEAR" — *ĒNGIKEN

ἤγγικεν (
ēngiken*) = perfect active, "has drawn near / has come close." The perfect tense indicates a completed action with present results: the kingdom has already approached and remains near. Whether "drawn near" means "is arriving" or "has arrived" is debated — the TT preserves the Greek's ambiguity.
3

For this is the one spoken of through Yesha'yahu (Isaiah) the prophet, saying, "A voice of one calling in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.'"

CRITICAL — ISAIAH 40:3 QUOTATION — KYRIOS/YHWH
- The quotation is from Isaiah 40:3. The LXX (the ancient Greek translation, followed by Matthew) makes two changes to the MT: (1) "in the wilderness" is moved to modify "calling" rather than "prepare" — making John the wilderness preacher, not the wilderness the road-building site; (2) YHWH becomes kyrios. Per GS Option C: "the Lord" in main text; original referent is YHWH. Matthew applies this text to Jesus by juxtaposition, not by the narrator's explicit identification. Confidence: VERIFIED [TEXTUAL].
The implication is significant: if John prepares "the way of the Lord (YHWH)," and he is preparing the way for Jesus, the pairing is suggestive without being stated. The TT translates without making the identification explicit — the reader draws the inference from the juxtaposition.
For the full table comparing the MT and LXX syntax, and the implication of applying a YHWH-preparation text to Jesus, see companion Section A3.
YESHA'YAHU — TT TRANSLITERATION
- Ἠσαΐου (Ēsaiou) = Yesha'yahu (Hebrew: יְשַׁעְיָהוּ, Yesha'yahu, "YHWH saves"). Familiar: Isaiah.
4

And Yochanan (John) himself had his clothing from camel hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.

ELIYAHU ECHO — CLOTHING
- 2 Kings 1:8 describes Eliyahu: "a man with a garment of hair and a leather belt tied around his waist." John's clothing echoes the prophet Eliyahu. Malachi 3:23 [4:5] promises that YHWH will send Eliyahu before the great and terrible day. Matthew will explicitly identify John as the Eliyahu figure later (Matt 11:14, 17:12-13). The clothing is the first signal.
LOCUSTS AND WILD HONEY
- ἀκρίδες (akrides) = locusts — permitted food under Levitical law (Lev 11:22). μέλι ἄγριον (meli agrion) = wild honey. The diet marks John as a wilderness ascetic, not dependent on settled agriculture or temple economy.
5

Then Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) went out to him, and all Yehudah (Judah), and all the region around the Yarden (Jordan),

COLLECTIVE SUBJECTS
- "Jerusalem" and "all Judah" as subjects — metonymy: the cities/regions stand for their inhabitants. The scope is emphatic: not just locals but the capital and the wider territory.
6

and they were being immersed by him in the Yarden (Jordan) river, confessing their sins.

"IMMERSED" — *EBAPTIZONTO

ἐβαπτίζοντο (
ebaptizonto) = imperfect passive, "were being immersed" — ongoing, repeated action. The imperfect tense describes a continuous practice, not a single event. Per locked glossary: baptisma* = immersion.
YARDEN — TT TRANSLITERATION
- Ἰορδάνῃ (Iordanē) = Yarden (Hebrew: יַרְדֵּן, Yarden, "the descender"). Familiar: Jordan.
7

And seeing many of the Perushim (Pharisees) and Tsduqim (Sadducees) coming to the immersion, he said to them, "Offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

PERUSHIM AND TSDUQIM — TT TRANSLITERATION
- Φαρισαίων (Pharisaiōn) = Perushim (Hebrew: פְּרוּשִׁים, Perushim, "separated ones"). Familiar: Pharisees. A Jewish movement emphasizing oral Torah, purity, and resurrection of the dead.
Σαδδουκαίων (Saddoukaiōn) = Tsduqim (Hebrew: צְדוּקִים, Tsduqim, possibly from Tsadoq the priest). Familiar: Sadducees. A priestly-aristocratic group associated with the Temple, rejecting oral Torah and resurrection.
• Matthew pairs them here, but they are distinct and often opposed groups. Their joint appearance at Yochanan (John)'s immersion may indicate that both established religious parties face the same prophetic challenge.
"OFFSPRING OF VIPERS"
- γεννήματα ἐχιδνῶν (gennēmata echidnōn) = "offspring/products of vipers." The insult questions their spiritual ancestry — not children of Avraham (Abraham) (v.9) but offspring of vipers. The image recurs in Matt 12:34 and 23:33.
8

Produce, then, fruit worthy of change of mind,

"FRUIT WORTHY OF CHANGE OF MIND"
- καρπὸν ἄξιον τῆς μετανοίας (karpon axion tēs metanoias) = "fruit worthy of the change of mind." Metanoia recurs from v.2. The demand is for visible evidence of the cognitive reorientation — not the inner experience alone but its observable results.
9

and do not think to say among yourselves, 'We have Avraham (Abraham) as our father,' for I say to you that God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham.

AVRAHAMIC DESCENT NOT SUFFICIENT
- Yochanan (John) dismantles the assumption that biological descent from Abraham guarantees standing before God. The wordplay in Aramaic may underlie the Greek: אַבְנַיָּא (avnaya, "stones") and בְּנַיָּא (bnaya, "children") are near-homophones. If the saying was originally in Aramaic, the pun would have been audible.
"GOD IS ABLE" — DIVINE SOVEREIGNTY
- δύναται ὁ θεός (dynatai ho theos) = "God is able." The power to create children of Abraham from stones recalls the creation narratives — God forms humanity from earth/ground (adamah, Gen 2:7). Covenantal status is not inherited automatically; it requires the "fruit" of v.8.
10

And already the axe lies at the root of the trees; so every tree not producing good fruit is cut down and thrown into fire.

JUDGMENT IMAGERY — AXE AT THE ROOT
- The image is of imminent judgment. The axe is not being swung — it lies at (πρὸς, pros) the root. The present tense signals that the judgment process has already begun. The tree/fruit metaphor continues from v.8 and recurs at 7:17-19.
11

I immerse you in water toward change of mind, but the one coming after me is stronger than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry; he will immerse you in the holy wind/spirit and fire.

CRITICAL — TWO IMMERSIONS CONTRASTED
- Yochanan (John)'s immersion: ἐν ὕδατι (en hydati) = "in water," εἰς μετάνοιαν (eis metanoian) = "toward change of mind." The coming one's: ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίῳ καὶ πυρί (en pneumati hagiō kai pyri) = "in holy wind/spirit and fire." The contrast is explicit; whether "wind/spirit and fire" denotes one event or two (purification and judgment) is deliberately left open by the text. Confidence: VERIFIED [TEXTUAL].
The ambiguity is grounded in the text itself: v.10 fire is destructive (trees cut down and burned); v.12 fire is separating (chaff burned to clean the threshing floor). Both images appear in sequence without the text resolving which applies to the immersion "in holy wind/spirit and fire."
For discussion of whether the fire is purifying (v.12 wheat/chaff) or destructive (v.10 burning trees) or both, and for the reception history of this verse in baptismal theology, see companion Sections A and F1.
"HOLY WIND/SPIRIT" — *PNEUMA HAGION

• As in 1:18, 20: per locked glossary,
pneuma = wind/spirit (slash policy). The anarthrous form (no article) appears again. The TT adds the in italics for English readability while marking the Greek's lack of article — consistent with the treatment at 1:18, 20 and John 1:33. "In the holy wind/spirit" maintains the HB ruach* alignment.
"NOT WORTHY TO CARRY HIS SANDALS"
- τὰ ὑποδήματα βαστάσαι (ta hypodēmata bastasai) = "to carry his sandals." Removing and carrying sandals was a slave's task (b. Ketubbot 96a lists it among services a slave performs for a master). John places himself below even slave status in relation to the coming one.
12

His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly clean his threshing floor, and he will gather his wheat into the storehouse, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."

AGRICULTURAL JUDGMENT METAPHOR
- πτύον (ptyon) = winnowing fork/shovel. The image is of grain harvest: wheat is tossed into the air; wind separates the heavier grain from the lighter chaff. The "stronger one" performs the separation. Wheat is stored; chaff is burned. The fire is ἄσβεστος (asbestos) = "unquenchable" — a term indicating completeness of burning, not necessarily duration.
FUTURE TENSES — PROPHETIC CERTAINTY
- Three future verbs: διακαθαριεῖ (diakathariei) = "will thoroughly clean"; συνάξει (synaxei) = "will gather"; κατακαύσει (katakausei) = "will burn." The futures express certainty about the coming judgment, not mere possibility.
13

Then Yeshua (Jesus) comes from the Galil (Galilee) to the Yarden (Jordan), to Yochanan (John), to be immersed by him.

HISTORICAL PRESENT — "COMES"
- παραγίνεται (paraginetai) = present tense, as in v.1. The same verb introduces both John (v.1) and Jesus (v.13) — a structural parallel.
"TO BE IMMERSED BY HIM"
- τοῦ βαπτισθῆναι ὑπ᾽ αὐτοῦ (tou baptisthēnai hyp' autou) = purpose: "to be immersed by him." Jesus's purpose is stated directly. The question of why Jesus seeks immersion is addressed in vv.14-15 but not fully resolved.
14

But Yochanan (John) was preventing him, saying, "I need to be immersed by you, and you come to me?"

CRITICAL — YOCHANAN'S RESISTANCE
- διεκώλυεν (diekōlyen) = imperfect active, "was trying to prevent" — the conative imperfect indicates an attempted but uncompleted action. John's objection implies he recognizes Yeshua (Jesus)'s status as superior. The objection raises the theological question explicitly: why does the one who will immerse in holy wind/spirit and fire come for immersion in water? The text records the question without fully answering it.
15

And Yeshua (Jesus), answering, said to him, "Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allows him.

CRITICAL — "TO FULFILL ALL RIGHTEOUSNESS"
- πληρῶσαι πᾶσαν δικαιοσύνην (plērōsai pasan dikaiosynēn) = "to fulfill all righteousness." This is Jesus's only explanation for seeking immersion — deliberately brief and without further clarification. Dikaiosynē per locked glossary covers both legal and relational senses; plēroō echoes the fulfillment formulas of chapters 1-2. The TT translates without selecting among the competing interpretations. Confidence: VERIFIED [TEXTUAL].
Interpretive options: (1) solidarity — Jesus undergoes what Israel undergoes at this moment of renewal; (2) inauguration — the immersion marks the start of public ministry, ratified by the divine voice (v.17); (3) comprehensive obedience — total conformity to divine will, even where the sin-confession category does not apply; (4) prophetic sign-act. The text's answer is deliberately brief; the TT preserves that brevity.
For the full range of interpretive options (solidarity with Israel, inauguration of mission, comprehensive obedience, sign-act), see companion Section G1.
"ALLOW *IT* NOW" — *APHES ARTI

ἄφες ἄρτι (
aphes arti) = "allow/permit now." The arti* ("now/for the present") may imply that the current arrangement is temporary — Yochanan (John)'s role as immerser will give way to the coming one's greater role.
16

And Yeshua (Jesus), having been immersed, immediately came up from the water, and see, the skies were opened to him, and he saw the wind/spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon him.

CRITICAL — SKIES OPENED
- ἠνεῴχθησαν αὐτῷ οἱ οὐρανοί (ēneōchthēsan autō hoi ouranoi) = "the skies were opened to him." The passive implies divine action; this is a theophanic motif (cf. Ezek 1:1). The TT renders "skies" consistently with v.2 — the same shamayim of Genesis 1:1.
CRITICAL — "WIND/SPIRIT OF GOD" DESCENDING
- τὸ πνεῦμα τοῦ θεοῦ (to pneuma tou theou) = "the wind/spirit of God." This fuller, articular form (contrast anarthrous pneuma hagion at 1:18, 20) echoes Genesis 1:2 (ruach elohim hovering over the waters) — the same verbal pairing at a threshold moment. The TT preserves the slash per locked glossary. The descent is ὡσεὶ περιστεράν (hōsei peristeran) = "like a dove" — a simile on the manner of descent, not identifying the wind/spirit as a dove. Confidence: VERIFIED [TEXTUAL].
For the Genesis 1:2 / Matthew 3:16 parallel table and discussion of what "like a dove" describes, see companion Section G2 and the Cross-Chapter Tracking.
"LIKE A DOVE" — WHAT THE SIMILE DESCRIBES
- The simile "like a dove" is attached to the manner of descending, not to the form taken. Whether a visible dove was seen, or the descent was dove-like in gentleness/movement, the text does not specify. The TT preserves the simile without expanding it.
17

And see, a voice from the skies, saying, "This is my son, the beloved, in whom I am well pleased."

CRITICAL — BAT QOL ("VOICE FROM THE SKIES")
- φωνὴ ἐκ τῶν οὐρανῶν (phōnē ek tōn ouranōn) = "a voice from the skies." The voice speaks in the third person — "This is my son" (contrast Mark 1:11: "You are my son"), addressing the audience rather than Yeshua (Jesus) directly. Matthew's formulation makes the declaration public; the TT preserves the third-person form without harmonizing to Mark. Confidence: VERIFIED [TEXTUAL].
For the bat qol tradition in rabbinic literature (the form of divine communication after direct prophecy ceased), see companion Section F2.
CRITICAL — "MY SON, THE BELOVED" — OT ECHOES
- The declaration merges two OT texts: Psalm 2:7 ("You are my son" — royal enthronement, Davidic king as YHWH's son) and Isaiah 42:1 ("my chosen, in whom my being delights" — the first Servant Song; εὐδόκησα maps to Isaiah's "delight"). Both identities — royal and servant — are present in the composite allusion; the TT does not adjudicate between them. Confidence: VERIFIED [TEXTUAL].
The word ἀγαπητός (agapētos) = "beloved" may also echo Gen 22:2 (LXX), where YHWH instructs Avraham (Abraham) to take "your son, the beloved" (ton huion sou ton agapēton) — Yitschaq (Isaac) at the binding. If active, this adds a third layer: Jesus as beloved son in the Aqedah pattern.
For the full three-way table (Ps 2:7 / Isa 42:1 / Matt 3:17) and the possible additional echo of Gen 22:2 (LXX "your son, the beloved"), see the Cross-Chapter Tracking at the end of this chapter.
"IN WHOM I AM WELL PLEASED" — TENSE
- ἐν ᾧ εὐδόκησα (en hō eudokēsa) = literally "in whom I was well pleased" (aorist). The aorist could express a timeless divine disposition or a specific past decision. The TT renders as present ("am well pleased") following the English sense of an ongoing state, but notes the Greek aorist.

Supplementary — patterns across the chapter

CROSS-CHAPTER TRACKING (HB -> Matthew)
Isaiah 40:3 -> Matt 3:3 — "Prepare the way of the Lord":

ElementIsaiah 40:3 (MT)Matt 3:3 (following LXX)
Syntax"A voice calling: 'In the wilderness prepare the way of YHWH'""A voice of one calling in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord'"
Divine nameYHWHkyrios (Option C: "the Lord")
"In the wilderness"Modifies "prepare" (the way is prepared in the wilderness)Modifies "calling" (the caller is in the wilderness)
ApplicationYHWH's return to Zion after exileYochanan preparing the way for Yeshua

The syntactic shift matters: in Isaiah, the wilderness is where the road is built; in Matthew, the wilderness is where the preacher preaches. Both readings are ancient — the LXX already reflects the second parsing.

2 Kings 1:8 -> Matt 3:4 — Eliyahu's clothing:

Element2 Kings 1:8Matt 3:4
Description"A man with a garment of hair and a leather belt tied around his waist""Clothing from camel hair and a leather belt around his waist"
IdentityEliyahu the TishbiYochanan the Immerser

The clothing description is nearly identical. Matthew presents Yochanan as the Eliyahu figure anticipated in Malachi 3:23 [4:5].

Psalm 2:7 + Isaiah 42:1 -> Matt 3:17 — "This is my son, the beloved":

ElementPsalm 2:7Isaiah 42:1Matt 3:17
Address"You are my son""My servant... my chosen""This is my son, the beloved"
RelationshipRoyal sonship (Davidic king)Servant callingComposite: son + beloved + well pleased
SpeakerYHWH (enthronement)YHWH (commissioning)Voice from the skies

The bat qol merges the royal and servant traditions into a single declaration. The "beloved" (ἀγαπητός, agapētos) may also echo Gen 22:2 (LXX), where YHWH tells Avraham to take "your son, the beloved" (ton huion sou ton agapēton) — Yitschaq. The Isaac-binding echo adds a sacrificial dimension.

Genesis 1:2 -> Matt 3:16 — Wind/spirit over the waters:

ElementGen 1:2Matt 3:16
Termרוּחַ אֱלֹהִים (ruach elohim) = wind/spirit of Godτὸ πνεῦμα τοῦ θεοῦ (to pneuma tou theou) = the wind/spirit of God
SettingHovering over the face of the watersDescending as Yeshua comes up from the water
ContextBefore creation beginsBefore Yeshua's public ministry begins
FunctionPrecursor to the ordering of the worldPrecursor to the "kingdom of the skies" proclamation

The verbal parallel is precise: ruach elohim (Gen 1:2) = pneuma tou theou (Matt 3:16). Both appear at a threshold moment — before creation, before mission.

END OF MATTHEW 3 — THE TRANSPARENT TRANSLATION (ENGLISH)

"A translation with nothing hidden."
