This chapter pairs a healing with the second apostolic sermon. At the temple's Beautiful Gate, Kefa and Yochanan heal a man lame from birth "in the name of Yeshua the Nazarene" (vv.1-10). The astonished crowd gathers at Solomon's portico, and Kefa preaches: it is not their own power but the God of the fathers who has glorified his servant Yeshua — whom they denied and killed but God raised — and faith in his name has made the man whole (vv.11-16). He calls them to change their minds, points to the prophets (Moses and Samuel), and reaffirms the Abrahamic covenant (vv.17-26). Note on speech-marking (Rule 30): Kefa's sermon is human speech and is not marked; the LORD's covenant word to Avraham (v.25, Gen 22:18) is divine speech and is marked . The Moses citation (vv.22-23) is Moses's reported speech about the LORD, so it is not marked. Watch the term-cruxes: archēgos ("Author/Pioneer/Originator of life," v.15) and pais ("servant/child," vv.13, 26) carry the Isaianic-Servant overtone — both are flagged.

Supplementary — patterns across the chapter

1

Now Kefa (Peter) and Yochanan (John) were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth.

"AT THE HOUR OF PRAYER, THE NINTH"
- ἐπὶ τὴν ὥραν τῆς προσευχῆς τὴν ἐνάτην (epi tēn hōran tēs proseuchēs tēn enatēn) = "at the hour of prayer, the ninth" (≈ 3 p.m., the hour of the evening sacrifice). Kefa and Yochanan keep the temple's prayer-times — the community remains within Israel's worship (cf. 2:46). The pair recall Lk 22:8 and Acts 1:13; 4:13.
2

And a certain man, lame from his mother's womb, was being carried, whom they used to set daily at the gate of the temple called Beautiful, to ask alms from those entering into the temple.

"LAME FROM HIS MOTHER'S WOMB" + "THE GATE CALLED BEAUTIFUL"
- χωλὸς ἐκ κοιλίας μητρὸς αὐτοῦ (chōlos ek koilias mētros autou) = "lame from his mother's womb" — lifelong, like the man of 4:22 (over forty years); the cure is therefore unmistakable. τὴν ὡραίαν ("the Beautiful") gate is otherwise unattested by that name; possibly the Nicanor Gate. ἐλεημοσύνην (eleēmosynēn) = "alms, mercy-gift."
3

He, seeing Kefa (Peter) and Yochanan (John) about to enter into the temple, was asking to receive alms.

THE REQUEST
- The man's expectation is alms; what he receives is healing (vv.6-8) — the narrative turns his small request into the occasion of a sign.
4

And Kefa (Peter), gazing at him together with Yochanan (John), said, "Look at us."

"GAZING" — *ATENISAS

ἀτενίσας… εἶπεν· βλέψον εἰς ἡμᾶς (
atenisas… eipen: blepson eis hēmas) = "gazing… said, 'Look at us.'" Atenizō* ("fix the eyes intently") is a Lukan favorite (2:14 wordfield; Acts 1:10). The mutual gaze prepares the encounter of faith (v.16).
5

And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them.

"EXPECTING TO RECEIVE"
- προσδοκῶν τι… λαβεῖν (prosdokōn ti labein) = "expecting to receive something" — i.e., money. The verb of expectation heightens the reversal of v.6.
6

But Kefa (Peter) said, "Silver and gold is not mine, but what I have, this I give you: in the name of Yeshua the Messiah (Jesus) the Nazarene — rise and walk."

CRITICAL — "IN THE NAME OF YESHUA" (the name-motif)
- ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ Ναζωραίου (en tō onomati Iēsou Christou tou Nazōraiou) = "in the name of Yeshua the Messiah the Nazarene." "The name" (onoma) is the chapter's keyword — the channel of power (vv.6, 16) and of salvation (cf. 2:21, 38; 4:12). ἔγειρε καὶ ("rise and") is bracketed in NA28 (a witness-divided reading); the TT marks "rise and" as the disputed words and keeps "walk." [textual: "rise and" — variant.]
7

And taking him by the right hand, he raised him up; and immediately his feet and ankles were made firm,

"WERE MADE FIRM" — *ESTEREŌTHĒSAN

ἐστερεώθησαν (
estereōthēsan) = "were made firm/solid" (the bones/joints). The same root (stereoō) returns at v.16 ("his name made him* firm") — the physical firmness and the firmness given by the name are linked verbally.
8

and leaping up, he stood and was walking, and entered with them into the temple, walking and leaping and praising God.

"WALKING AND LEAPING" — ISAIAH 35:6
- ἁλλόμενος (hallomenos, "leaping") echoes Isaiah 35:6 LXX ("then the lame will leap like a deer") — a sign of the promised restoration. The healed man enters the temple he had only sat outside of (v.2).
9

And all the people saw him walking and praising God,

PUBLIC WITNESS
- "All the people" see — the healing is public and verifiable (as the lifelong lameness, v.2, made it undeniable), setting up the crowd of v.11.
10

and they recognized him, that this was the one sitting for alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, and they were filled with amazement and ecstasy at what had happened to him.

"AMAZEMENT AND ECSTASY" — *THAMBOUS KAI EKSTASEŌS

θάμβους καὶ ἐκστάσεως (
thambous kai ekstaseōs) = "amazement and ecstasy/astonishment." Their recognition that it is the same* lifelong beggar makes the sign incontestable — the crowd's wonder is the occasion of the sermon.
11

And as he held on to Kefa (Peter) and Yochanan (John), all the people ran together to them at the portico called Solomon's (Shlomoh's), utterly astonished.

"SOLOMON'S PORTICO"
- τῇ στοᾷ τῇ καλουμένῃ Σολομῶντος (tē stoa tē kaloumenē Solomōntos) = "the portico called Shlomoh's (Solomon's)" — a colonnade on the temple's east side, a gathering place for the early community (5:12; cf. Jn 10:23). ἔκθαμβοι = "utterly astonished."
12

And seeing this, Kefa (Peter) answered the people, "Men, Israelites, why do you marvel at this, or why do you gaze at us, as if by our own power or piety we have made him walk?

CRITICAL — "NOT BY OUR OWN POWER OR PIETY"
- ὡς ἰδίᾳ δυνάμει ἢ εὐσεβείᾳ (hōs idia dynamei ē eusebeia) = "as if by our own power or piety." Kefa deflects all credit from the apostles — the power is God's, through the name (v.16). This is the interpretive key to the sign: the apostles are witnesses, not wonder-workers. → Companion §A1.
13

The God of Avraham (Abraham) and of Yitschaq (Isaac) and of Ya'aqov (Jacob), the God of our fathers, glorified his servant Yeshua (Jesus), whom you handed over and denied before the face of Pilate, when that one had decided to release him.

CRITICAL — "HIS SERVANT" (*PAIS*) — THE ISAIANIC SERVANT
- ὁ θεὸς Ἀβραὰμ καὶ… ἐδόξασεν τὸν παῖδα αὐτοῦ Ἰησοῦν (ho theos Abraam… edoxasen ton paida autou Iēsoun) = "the God of Avraham… glorified his servant (pais) Yeshua." The opening names YHWH by the patriarchal self-identification (Ex 3:6, 15). παῖς (pais) = "servant" or "child"; here the Servant of the LORD of Isaiah 52:13 ("my servant… shall be glorified," LXX doxasthēsetai) is in view — the TT renders "servant" and notes the child/servant range. [pais: servant (Isaianic) — PROBABLE; "child" possible.] → Companion §A2 (the Servant).
14

But you denied the holy and righteous one, and asked for a man, a murderer, to be granted to you,

"THE HOLY AND RIGHTEOUS ONE" vs "A MURDERER"
- τὸν ἅγιον καὶ δίκαιον (ton hagion kai dikaion) = "the holy and righteous one" — titles of the Messiah (cf. 7:52; Isa 53:11 "the righteous one, my servant"). The antithesis — they asked for ἄνδρα φονέα ("a man, a murderer," i.e. Barabbas, Lk 23:18-25) instead of the righteous one — sharpens the indictment.
15

but the Author of life you killed, whom God raised from the dead — of which we are witnesses.

CRITICAL — "THE AUTHOR OF LIFE" — *ARCHĒGOS

τὸν δὲ ἀρχηγὸν τῆς ζωῆς ἀπεκτείνατε (
ton de archēgon tēs zōēs apekteinate) = "but the Author of life you killed." Archēgos = "leader, founder, pioneer, originator, author" — one who originates and leads the way (cf. Heb 2:10; 12:2). The TT renders "Author of life" and flags the range; the paradox is sharp — they killed the very originator of life, "whom God raised." [archēgos*: Author/Pioneer/Originator — the full range is intended; Uncertain which single English word.] → Companion §A2.
16

And upon the faith of his name, this one whom you see and know — his name made him firm; and the faith that is through him gave him this wholeness before you all.

CRITICAL — "HIS NAME MADE HIM FIRM" (a dense, doubled verse)
- ἐπὶ τῇ πίστει τοῦ ὀνόματος αὐτοῦ… ἐστερέωσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ = "upon the faith of his name… his name made him firm." The Greek is famously crowded (faith / the name / this man / the faith through him); the TT keeps the doubling rather than smoothing it. Estereōsen ("made firm") ties back to the ankles "made firm" in v.7. ὁλοκληρίαν (holoklērian) = "wholeness, complete soundness." The healing is "the name" + "faith through him." [the syntax is genuinely tangled; rendered to preserve, not resolve.]
17

"And now, brothers, I know that you acted according to ignorance, just as also your rulers;

"ACCORDING TO IGNORANCE" — *KATA AGNOIAN

κατὰ ἄγνοιαν ἐπράξατε (
kata agnoian epraxate*) = "you acted according to ignorance." Kefa shifts from indictment (vv.13-15) to appeal; ignorance does not excuse but opens the door to "change of mind" (v.19; cf. Lk 23:34). "Your rulers" too — the leaders are included.
18

but God, the things which he foretold through the mouth of all the prophets — that his Messiah would suffer — he thus fulfilled.

CRITICAL — "THAT HIS MESSIAH WOULD SUFFER"
- παθεῖν τὸν Χριστὸν αὐτοῦ (pathein ton Christon autou) = "that his Messiah would suffer." A suffering Messiah — read as the burden of "all the prophets" (esp. Isaiah 53) — is the interpretive claim of the early proclamation (cf. Lk 24:26-27, 46). Human guilt (vv.13-15) and divine foretelling are held together. → Companion §B1.
19

Change your minds, therefore, and turn, for the wiping out of your sins,

CRITICAL — "CHANGE YOUR MINDS… AND TURN"
- μετανοήσατε… καὶ ἐπιστρέψατε (metanoēsate… kai epistrepsate) = "Change your minds… and turn." μετάνοια = "change of mind" (locked GS term); paired with ἐπιστρέφω ("turn [to God]") — the prophetic call to shuv (return). εἰς τὸ ἐξαλειφθῆναι ("for the wiping out") — the goal/result; exaleiphō = "wipe away, erase" (a ledger metaphor). → Companion §B2.
20

so that times of refreshing may come from the face of the Lord, and that he may send the one foreordained for you, the Messiah, Yeshua (Jesus),

"TIMES OF REFRESHING" + κύριος = YHWH
- καιροὶ ἀναψύξεως ἀπὸ προσώπου τοῦ κυρίου (kairoi anapsyxeōs apo prosōpou tou kyriou) = "times of refreshing from the face of the Lord." Kyrios = YHWH (Option C). Anapsyxis ("refreshing, relief") is rare — the eschatological relief tied to repentance. The Messiah is "foreordained" (prokecheirismenon) for them.
21

whom heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, of which God spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old.

CRITICAL — "RESTORATION OF ALL THINGS" — *APOKATASTASIS

ἄχρι χρόνων ἀποκαταστάσεως πάντων (
achri chronōn apokatastaseōs pantōn) = "until the times of restoration of all things." Apokatastasis = "restoration, re-establishment" — the prophetic renewal of all things (cf. the disciples' "restore the kingdom," 1:6, same root). Its scope is debated (cosmic renewal; Israel's restoration; universal); the TT keeps it without resolving. [apokatastasis*: scope debated — rendered literally, Uncertain.] → Companion §B3.
22

Mosheh (Moses) indeed said that 'A prophet for you the Lord God will raise up from your brothers, like me; him you shall hear in all things, whatever he may speak to you.

CRITICAL — THE PROPHET LIKE MOSES (Deut 18:15-19)
- προφήτην ὑμῖν ἀναστήσει κύριος ὁ θεὸς… ὡς ἐμέ (prophētēn hymin anastēsei kyrios ho theos… hōs eme) = "A prophet for you the Lord God will raise up… like me." This is Moses's reported speech about the LORD (κύριος = YHWH, Option C), so it is not divine-marked. The prophet-like-Moses (Deut 18:15-19) is identified with Yeshua; "you shall hear him" makes heeding him decisive (v.23). → Companion §B4.
23

And it will be that every soul, whoever does not hear that prophet, will be utterly destroyed from the people.'

"WILL BE UTTERLY DESTROYED FROM THE PEOPLE"
- ἐξολεθρευθήσεται ἐκ τοῦ λαοῦ (exolethreuthēsetai ek tou laou) = "will be utterly destroyed from the people" — Acts sharpens Deut 18:19 (with language from Lev 23:29) into a "cut off from the people" warning. Heeding the prophet-like-Moses is the dividing line.
24

And indeed all the prophets, from Shmuel (Samuel) and those who came after, as many as spoke, also announced these days.

"FROM SAMUEL" — THE PROPHETIC LINE
- ἀπὸ Σαμουὴλ καὶ τῶν καθεξῆς (apo Samouēl kai tōn kathexēs) = "from Shmuel (Samuel) and those after." Samuel heads the line of the "former prophets"; the whole prophetic witness "announced these days" — the present time as the prophets' horizon.
25

You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant which God covenanted with your fathers, saying to Avraham (Abraham), 'And in your seed all the families of the earth will be blessed.'

CRITICAL — THE ABRAHAMIC COVENANT (Gen 22:18); DIVINE SPEECH
- ἐν τῷ σπέρματί σου ἐνευλογηθήσονται πᾶσαι αἱ πατριαὶ τῆς γῆς (en tō spermati sou eneulogēthēsontai pasai hai patriai tēs gēs) = "And in your seed all the families of the earth will be blessed" (Gen 22:18; cf. 12:3). This is the LORD's direct covenant word to Avraham → marked (Rule 30 / A-004). "Sons of the prophets and of the covenant" — the hearers are heirs of the promise; "all the families of the earth" holds the nations in view, though Israel is addressed "first" (v.26). → Companion §B5 (the Abrahamic blessing).
26

To you first, God, having raised up his servant, sent him, blessing you in the turning of each of you from your wickednesses."

CRITICAL — "TO YOU FIRST" + "HIS SERVANT" (*PAIS*)
- ὑμῖν πρῶτον ἀναστήσας ὁ θεὸς τὸν παῖδα αὐτοῦ ἀπέστειλεν αὐτὸν = "To you first, God, having raised up his servant (pais), sent him." "First" implies a "then" (the nations), consistent with Gen 22:18 (v.25) and the program of 1:8. Pais again = the Servant (cf. v.13). The blessing is moral-transformative: "in turning each of you from your wickednesses." ἀναστήσας may mean "raised up [in history]" or "raised [from the dead]" — the TT keeps "having raised up." [anastēsas: raised-up/resurrected — Possible both.]
