Genesis 5

What happens: The generations of Adam — a ten-generation genealogy from Adam to Noah, structured by a locked formula: "X lived Y years, begot Z, lived W more years, begot sons and daughters, all his days were N years, and he died." Two entries break the formula in distinct ways: Enoch breaks the death refrain — instead of "and he died," the text reads "he walked with God and was not, for God took him"; Noah breaks the pattern differently — Lamech names him with a speech (a name-etymology rather than a death notice), and v.32 names three sons rather than one, launching the flood narrative rather than closing with death.

Key themes: The "book of generations" — the only such heading prefixed with "book"; the image/likeness chain (God → Adam → Seth); the relentless "and he died" refrain; Enoch's departure without dying — "walked with God" and "was not" (traditionally called a "translation," meaning God took him before death); Noah's name-explanation (comfort/regret); extraordinary lifespans (365–969 years).

Watch for: Enoch is the seventh from Adam (parallel to Enmeduranki, seventh pre-flood king in Sumerian tradition); Enoch lives 365 years (solar-year number, shortest in the list); Methuselah's death year coincides exactly with the flood year by the text's own arithmetic; the chapter uses the generic "God" throughout except v.29, where Lamech's speech names YHWH.

Connection: Lamech names Noah with a hope tied to the cursed ground (5:29, echoing 3:17). The "comfort/regret" root in Noah's name reappears at 6:6 as divine "regret" — comfort and regret sharing a root.

¹This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day God created a human, in the likeness of God he made him. ²Male and female he created them, and he blessed them, and he called their name Human in the day they were created. ³And Adam lived one hundred and thirty years, and he begot in his likeness, according to his image, and he called his name Shet (Seth). ⁴And the days of Adam after he begot Seth were eight hundred years, and he begot sons and daughters. ⁵And all the days of Adam which he lived were nine hundred and thirty years, and he died.

⁶And Seth lived one hundred and five years, and he begot Enosh. ⁷And Seth lived after he begot Enosh eight hundred and seven years, and he begot sons and daughters. ⁸And all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years, and he died.

⁹And Enosh lived ninety years, and he begot Qenan. ¹⁰And Enosh lived after he begot Qenan eight hundred and fifteen years, and he begot sons and daughters. ¹¹And all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years, and he died.

¹²And Qenan lived seventy years, and he begot Mahalalel. ¹³And Qenan lived after he begot Mahalalel eight hundred and forty years, and he begot sons and daughters. ¹⁴And all the days of Qenan were nine hundred and ten years, and he died.

¹⁵And Mahalalel lived sixty-five years, and he begot Yered. ¹⁶And Mahalalel lived after he begot Yered eight hundred and thirty years, and he begot sons and daughters. ¹⁷And all the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred and ninety-five years, and he died.

¹⁸And Yered lived one hundred and sixty-two years, and he begot Chanokh (Enoch). ¹⁹And Yered lived after he begot Enoch eight hundred years, and he begot sons and daughters. ²⁰And all the days of Yered were nine hundred and sixty-two years, and he died.

²¹And Enoch lived sixty-five years, and he begot Metushelach (Methuselah). ²²And Enoch walked with God after he begot Methuselah three hundred years, and he begot sons and daughters. ²³And all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. ²⁴And Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.

²⁵And Methuselah lived one hundred and eighty-seven years, and he begot Lemekh (Lamech). ²⁶And Methuselah lived after he begot Lamech seven hundred and eighty-two years, and he begot sons and daughters. ²⁷And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred and sixty-nine years, and he died.

²⁸And Lamech lived one hundred and eighty-two years, and he begot a son. ²⁹And he called his name Noach (Noah), saying, "This one shall comfort us from our work and from the toil of our hands, from the ground which YHWH cursed." ³⁰And Lamech lived after he begot Noah five hundred and ninety-five years, and he begot sons and daughters. ³¹And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred and seventy-seven years, and he died.

³²And Noah was five hundred years old, and Noah begot Shem, Cham (Ham), and Yafet (Japheth).
