The Transparent Translation · Mark

Mark 1

Provisional

Chapter Overview
What happens: The Gospel opens by announcing the "beginning of the good news of Yeshua the anointed one." A composite citation (Malachi/Exodus + Isaiah) frames Yochanan the Immerser as the prophesied messenger preparing the way. John appears in the wilderness, clothed like Eliyahu, proclaiming an immersion of change-of-mind toward release of sins; crowds from Judea and Jerusalem come to be immersed in the Jordan. John announces a stronger one coming who will immerse "in holy wind/spirit." Yeshua comes from Nazareth and is immersed; the skies are torn open, the wind/spirit descends like a dove, and a voice declares, "You are my son, the beloved." The wind/spirit immediately drives him into the wilderness for forty days, tested by the Satan, among wild animals, served by messengers. After John is handed over, Yeshua comes proclaiming, "The time has been fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has drawn near." He calls Shimon, Andreas, Ya'aqov, and Yochanan from their fishing. In Kfar Nachum he teaches with authority in the synagogue and silences an unclean spirit; he heals Shimon's mother-in-law and many at the door by evening; he withdraws to pray, then travels proclaiming through the Galilee; finally he cleanses a leper, who spreads the report so widely that Yeshua can no longer enter a town openly.

Key themes: The abrupt, fast-paced opening unique to Mark; "good news" (euangelion) as the book's keynote; the composite prophetic citation and the wilderness preparation; the threefold theophany at the immersion (skies torn, wind/spirit descends, voice speaks); the divine voice in the second person ("You are my son" — contrast Matthew's "This is"); "kingdom of God" rather than "kingdom of the skies"; authority (exousia) — over teaching, over unclean spirits, over disease; the messianic silencing motif (Yeshua suppresses the demons' testimony); euthys ("immediately") as the engine of the narrative.

Watch for: "Son of God" in v.1 is text-critically disputed (bracketed in NA28). The v.2 citation is attributed to "Isaiah" although it opens with material from Malachi 3:1 / Exodus 23:20 — a known feature that generated the variant "in the prophets." The skies are torn (schizomenous, v.10) — a more violent verb than Matthew's "opened"; the same root returns at the temple curtain (15:38). The voice addresses Yeshua directly ("You are…"), not the crowd. In v.41 the manuscripts split between Yeshua being "moved with compassion" and "moved with anger." Mark's "kingdom of God" should not be harmonized to Matthew's "kingdom of the skies."

Connection: The wilderness preparation and the prophetic citation root the Gospel in the HB prophetic tradition (Malachi, Isaiah, Exodus). John's clothing echoes Eliyahu (2 Kings 1:8). The wind/spirit descending recalls Genesis 1:2 (ruach elohim). The voice merges Psalm 2:7 (royal sonship) and Isaiah 42:1 (the servant). The forty days in the wilderness echo Israel's forty years and Moshe's and Eliyahu's forty days.

Glossary

1Beginning of the good news of Yeshua (Jesus) the anointed one, son of God. 2As it has been written in Yesha'yahu (Isaiah) the prophet, "See, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way; 3a voice of one calling in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,'" 4Yochanan (John) came, the one immersing in the wilderness and proclaiming an immersion of change of mind toward release of sins. 5And all the Yehudah (Judean) region and all the people of Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) were going out to him, and they were being immersed by him in the Yarden (Jordan) river, confessing their sins. 6And John was clothed in camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist, and eating locusts and wild honey. 7And he was proclaiming, saying, "There comes the one stronger than I after me, of whom I am not worthy to stoop down and loosen the strap of his sandals. 8I immersed you in water, but he will immerse you in the holy wind/spirit."

9And it happened in those days that Jesus came from Natzeret (Nazareth) of the Galil (Galilee) and was immersed in the Jordan by John. 10And immediately, coming up out of the water, he saw the skies being torn open and the wind/spirit descending upon him like a dove. 11And a voice came out of the skies: "You are my son, the beloved; in you I was well pleased."

12And immediately the wind/spirit drives him out into the wilderness. 13And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tested by the Satan, and he was with the wild animals, and the messengers were serving him.

14And after John was handed over, Jesus came into the Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God 15and saying, "The time has been fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has drawn near; change your minds and trust in the good news."

16And passing alongside the sea of the Galilee, he saw Shimon (Simon) and Andreas (Andrew) the brother of Simon casting a net in the sea, for they were fishers. 17And Jesus said to them, "Come after me, and I will make you become fishers of people." 18And immediately, leaving the nets, they followed him. 19And going on a little, he saw Ya'aqov (James) the son of Zavdai (Zebedee) and John his brother, also themselves in the boat mending the nets, 20and immediately he called them. And leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, they went away after him.

21And they go into Kfar Nachum (Capernaum); and immediately on the sabbath, entering into the synagogue, he was teaching. 22And they were astounded at his teaching, for he was teaching them as one having authority and not as the scribes. 23And immediately there was in their synagogue a man in an unclean spirit, and he cried out, 24saying, "What to us and to you, Jesus Natzeri (of Nazareth)? Did you come to destroy us? I know who you are — the holy one of God." 25And Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be muzzled, and come out of him!" 26And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a great voice, came out of him. 27And all were amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this? A new teaching with authority! And he commands the unclean spirits, and they obey him." 28And immediately his report went out everywhere into the whole surrounding region of the Galilee.

29And immediately, coming out of the synagogue, they came into the house of Simon and Andrew with James and John. 30Now the mother-in-law of Simon was lying down, fevered, and immediately they speak to him about her. 31And approaching, he raised her up, grasping the hand; and the fever left her, and she was serving them.

32Now evening having come, when the sun set, they were bringing to him all those having it badly and the demon-possessed; 33and the whole city was gathered together at the door. 34And he healed many having it badly with various diseases, and he cast out many demons, and he was not permitting the demons to speak, because they knew him.

35And very early, while still night, rising up, he went out and went away into a deserted place, and there he was praying. 36And Simon and those with him hunted him down, 37and they found him and say to him, "Everyone is seeking you." 38And he says to them, "Let us go elsewhere, into the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim there also; for this I came out." 39And he came proclaiming into their synagogues in the whole Galilee and casting out the demons.

40And there comes to him a leper, calling upon him and kneeling and saying to him, "If you are willing, you are able to cleanse me." 41And moved with compassion, stretching out his hand, he touched him and says to him, "I am willing; be cleansed." 42And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was cleansed. 43And sternly warning him, immediately he sent him out 44and says to him, "See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moshe (Moses) commanded, for a testimony to them." 45But he, going out, began to proclaim it much and to spread the word, so that Yeshua was no longer able to enter openly into a city, but was outside in deserted places; and they were coming to him from everywhere.
